How much data do you need?

We often see people looking for an unlimited data plan.
As we explained in our blog post, there is no Pocket WiFi with true unlimited data plan in Japan.
There must be fair usage policy with the notorious speed restriction at some point.
This is simply because Pocket WiFi is still a mobile broadband like a smartphone. It's not a fiber-optic you will find at home.

If you find a Pocket WiFi advertised as unlimited data, we suggest that you ask the rental provider if you can use data unlimitedly at a normal speed.

We believe 1GB a day is more than enough when you are traveling.
And even if you need more data, we can still provide additional GB upon request.
Or just use hotel wifi or other free wifi when you need to transfer large files.

Bonus: We are giving away free 10GB data for 4G and LTE!

Data chart

What speed should you expect?

You might find rental providers advertise Pocket WiFi speed as 187.5Mbps or 75Mbps.
Be aware that those figures are theoretical at best effort.
In actual use, the speed will be much slower than those numbers.

Having said that, the speed of 4G and LTE Pocket WiFi is much faster than almost all the public free wifi in Japan.
Besides, you would feel fast and just good enough if the speed is over 10Mbps which you can expect with 4G and possibly LTE Pocket WiFi except peak times or heavy populated areas.

So be assured that you will feel comfortable in terms of speed even if you are not going to get what's advertised as best effort.
It's still fast.

And there won't be much difference in the actual speed of 4G (or LTE) Pocket WiFi from different rental companies.

How To Find A Pocket WiFi Plan That Suits You Best

Picking the right plan can be difficult especially if it's your first time to rent one. Different people have different needs or priority for internet use, but fundamentally it boils down to 4 factors: speed, data volume, coverage and price.

Speed

Speed

Needless to say, 4G is the fastest network available in Japan. Then, LTE comes in second place. There is a difference in the actual speed between them but they are both fast and the difference is not considerable, and so is the price difference. If you are not keen on speed, 3G plan becomes an option. 3G in Japan is relatively fast and stable if you compare to developing countries.

Data volume

Data volume

50GB, 25GB and 10GB plan have a fixed data allowance regardless of the rental days, so if you have a rough idea of how much data you will need for your trip, it's quite easy to select one of them.
Data allotment for 4G and LTE model depends on how long you rent for. So unless you have a specific data amount requirement in mind, it's probably best and easy that you pick one of the two.

Coverage

Coverage

4G network is better than LTE and LTE is almost the same or slightly better than 3G when it comes to coverage based on the population. So if you are traveling to rural areas or mountainous area, we recommend 4G plan. 4G and LTE works well in the underground too. For your information, Pocket WiFi uses Softbank network which is way better than WiMAX in terms of coverage.

Price

Price

Budget is probably the easiest way to narrow down from the multiple options. Do not forget to make the most of our best price guarantee program, early bird discount and time sale if available to get the cheapest price possible.

Ideal portable internet for travellers

This is the solution for high roaming charges in Japan. The device is very simple to use, lives in your pocket, and provides WiFi for all your devices. Delivery and return is made very simple (by mail), and it provided continuous cover for my wife and I including in country areas - e.g. Nakasendo Trail hikes. Highly recommended for visitors to Japan.

Convenient and easy

Loved having access to wifi everywhere. It was useful to navigate, check on open hours, and keep in touch with family at home. It was affordable, arrived on time at the hotel we stayed at, and a good connection at all times. Easy to return too, in the red mailbox at the departures level in the airport.

FAQ

How good is the coverage?

Yes, it works with ANY WiFi-enabled devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops.

Is it easy to set-up a WiFi device?

Yes. It's same as connecting to any WiFi network, select a network and enter the password that's it. See in details on our set-up page.

You just need to post everything by midnight on your return date.

Do you offer any insurance to cover damages to the Pocket WiFi?

Currently, we do not offer insurance service for the rental products as most of our customers use their own travel insurance to cover the fees occurred to their possessions. We will provide all the necessary documents for the travel insurance if asked.

Pocket WiFi, portable WiFi router, WiFi egg, MiFi, what are the differences bewteen them?

In terms of the basic functions, they are all the same. They have different names as some are registered as trademark.

Once your data consumption reaches your total data allotment, it is subject to speed restriction from the network operator. We do not know when or if the restriction applies, but the speed will be below 128kbps when restricted.
Please be assured that the network won't be cut off even if you use up your data allowance.

How long does the battery last?

With the extra power bank we provide, it should last for a whole day or even longer depending on the use case unless you use it non-stop e.g. keep streaming movies over and over.
